Anterior Hip Replacement
Understanding the Hip Joint
The hip is one of the most important joints in the body. It enables us to sit, stand, move, bend, and carry our weight. Hip pain as a result of arthritis, injury, cancer, or fracture can be debilitating, and your orthopaedic physician may recommend a hip replacement to alleviate your symptoms and help you regain functionality in your hip.
Most patients decide the time for hip replacement surgery is right when their hip pain prevents them from living comfortably—when their pain keeps them from doing the activities they want to do, or keeps them from taking care of themselves, their home and their families. It is an individual decision, but joint replacement surgery can help improve quality of life for people suffering chronic hip pain.
What is Anterior Hip Replacement?
The anterior approach to hip replacement is one of the newest and most widely accepted advances in joint replacement. Unlike traditional hip replacements, the anterior approach creates a smaller incision on the front of the hip through a natural interval between muscles. Leaving all muscles attached allows for near normal hip stability after surgery, so patients are generally not required to follow hip precautions. Using computer navigation and an intra-operative X-ray, our orthopaedic surgeons are able to achieve the most accurate and comfortable positioning of the artificial hip.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Joint Replacement
Because the anterior approach enables the surgeon to spare the hip muscles, the muscles are better able to support the new joint post-surgery. This enables anterior hip replacement recipients to experience many benefits:
Shorter Hospital Stay
Lower Dislocation Rates
Fewer Long-Term Complications, Like Limping
Minimal Soft Tissue Trauma
Fewer Post-Op Restrictions
